What is a Model Forest?

The Model Forest is a not-for-profit corporation formed as a partnership of organizations and individuals working on the implementation of activities that advance our abilities to practice sustainable forest management and community-based economic development utilizing our forest resources.

A model forest provides a unique forum where these partners can gain a greater understanding of conflicting views, share their knowledge, and combine their expertise and resources to develop innovative, region-specific approaches to sustainable forest management.

A model forest acts as a hands-on laboratory in which these leading-edge techniques are researched, developed, applied and monitored.

A model forest encompasses a working scale land base where participants have a direct interest in and influence over the uses in the forest. The rights of participating landowners, leaseholders and land managers are not superseded by the model forest.
