Envirothon
The Newfoundland and Labrador Envirothon is a fast paced, competitive, challenging event that promotes teamwork, public speaking and an understanding of Newfoundland & Labrador’s natural resources. Teams of five High School students are tested in five theme areas:
- Soils/Land Use
- Forestry
- Aquatic Ecology
- Wildlife
- Special Topic
The special topic changes annually. Protection of Groundwater through Urban, Agricultural and Environmental Planning.
On the first day of competition, students complete a 15 minute field test in each of the topics listed above. They are then given a problem scenario to solve based on the current theme and allowed 4 hours to prepare a solution to the scenario.
On the second day of competition, teams present their scenarios to the panel of judges. The team with the most creative and effective solution to the problem, as well as the best presenting skills, wins the oral presentation component. The team with the highest combined score from the field testing and oral presentation components wins the provincial Envirothon and qualifies to compete at the Canon Envirothon to be held in California in 2010.
